Self-Evaluation and Individual Reflection
Instructions:
- Students are required to perform a self-evaluation and reflection based on their mobile application design final project.
- This project aims to document the issues, problems, and difficulties and propose solutions to improve the mobile app design aesthetic and user flow.
- Mobile app design is an iterative process, and this task will expose to students the constant improvements one can make to their app.
- Students are required to submit the documentation in Google Docs for ease of commenting and feedback by the module coordinator.
Requirements:
- To submit a self-reflection blog post on the app design refining process with a clear comparison between the old and new design.
- Refer to example past students’ blogs for more details.

My final project
Self-reflection:
In my first semester, I redesigned an app called REDBOOK. During this 14-week period, I conducted extensive user testing last semester and received a lot of constructive feedback. These suggestions helped me make significant improvements. Overall, I don't think there are any major issues with the redesign of the Redbook app, although there may still be room for minor tweaks, such as improving the font size or icons.
Sections of the App:
Startup Page
Strengths:
1. Strong visual appeal:
- Bright colors, the combination of red and cartoon images on the startup page, and the colorful character design on the welcome page can quickly catch the user's eyes and attract the user's attention.
2. Prominent brand elements:
- The startup page clearly displays the brand name of "Little Red Book" to strengthen brand awareness; the "REDclub" and special characters on the subsequent pages convey a unique brand culture.
3. Interesante:
- Cute cartoon images and a lively layout add interest, which is in line with the relaxed atmosphere of life applications and can improve user favorability.
Weaknesses:
Poor integration: The background and the middle promotional picture are relatively independent, and there is a sense of visual separation, which does not achieve the best smooth effect.

- Visual integration: adjust the color tone, light, and shadow of the background and promotional pictures, and use gradient, blur, and other effects to make the two blend naturally.
- Simplify information: streamline the text on the welcome page, highlight the key characteristics of the role, and avoid information piling.

Login Page
1. Simple and easy to use:
- The layout of the login page is simple, the elements are not complicated, and users can quickly locate the operation area. Reasonable whitespace treatment allows each functional module to be clearly presented, improving the convenience of operation.
2. Multiple login methods:
- There are shortcuts such as one-click login and WeChat login, and other login methods are implied to meet the preferences of different users and lower the login threshold.
3. Eye-catching buttons:
- The "one-click login" and "WeChat login" buttons are bright in color, forming a high contrast with the background, which is easy for users to identify and click, and the operation is clear.
4. Clear compliance prompts:
- Clearly display the terms and conditions of the user agreement to protect the user's right to know and meet the requirements of application operation specifications.
Weaknesses:
1. Lack of visual appeal:
- The overall design elements are simple, lacking unique creativity and visual highlights, and it is difficult to attract users' attention the first time.
2. Other login methods are unclear:
- Only icons are used to imply other login methods, and the specific types are not clearly displayed, which is not friendly to users who are not familiar with the existing login methods.
3. English part defects:
- There are formatting issues in the English terms, the overall English content is limited, and the internationalization adaptation is insufficient, which affects the overseas user experience.
4. Checkboxes are easy to ignore:
- The checkboxes in the user agreement are relatively small and not prominent, which may cause users to log in directly without noticing, posing compliance risks.

- Optimize visual hierarchy: use colors/icons to distinguish primary and secondary buttons (such as WeChat login highlight).
Front page
Strengths:
1. Clean layout:
- The top navigation bar is clearly defined from the bottom navigation bar, and the design uses a simple and intuitive layout.
2. Consistent color scheme:
- The use of red, white, and yellow creates a visually coherent experience, making it easier for users to browse content.
3. Diverse content and personalized design:
- The homepage covers modules such as "Nearby" and "Follow," which not only provide a map for users to choose cities and recommended scenery around their location but also display the dynamics of the users they follow, enhancing user participation and adapting to different scenarios.
Weaknesses:
- Although the "Search" button appears in the upper right corner, it does not seem prominent enough, which may make it difficult for users to find it in the interface.
- The date font of the post is relatively small, which affects the appearance.
- Some of the fonts on the homepage have some minor errors, and there are a few too many Chinese characters, which affects the readability for users.

- Consider increasing the contrast of the text (upper and lower case).
- Add some color or design to the search button to make it stand out.
- Change Chinese to English to enhance user readability.
Shopping and order payment confirmation
Strengths:
- Intuitive operation guidance: some buttons in the shopping process are very clear and easy to understand, which is convenient for users to understand and operate. The address management form is neatly arranged, and the operation logic is very clear.
- Simple information presentation: Order confirmation also clearly displays key information such as product price and shipping cost without unnecessary interference.
- Effective visual design: The shopping interface uses color to highlight important buttons such as payment to form a visual hierarchy. Address management improves the portability of operation through reasonable layout and interactive pop-up windows.
- Strong interactive experience: Address management, filling, provincial selection pop-up windows, and other functions simplify user input steps and improve operation efficiency.
Weaknesses:
- Although the visual effect is clear, the font size and color somewhat affect the aesthetics of the interface.
- The format of the photos in the product details page of the interface is somewhat different, which affects the visual perception.
- Too much Chinese will affect user readability.

- Change the font size and overall color.
- Consider optimizing the product details page, such as contrast, consistent design style and format, etc., to improve user experience.
- Unify the language and optimize the user experience.

Overall, the information design of these three parts is clear, but the color and size of some fonts and icon designs affect the visual coherence.
I redesigned the icons, buttons, font sizes, and colors in these three parts to enhance the visual effect.
