SPATIAL DESIGN 2 : Project 1-Part A, B
Require:
The teacher asked students to complete an assignment on "Precedent Research and Analysis." We need to select two retail stores for in-depth research, one of which is an overseas store (information can be obtained through the Internet) and the other is a real-life project. The research content covers several key aspects, including explaining the basic information of the store, including name, location, type and historical background; analyzing design features, such as how the layout guides customer flow and interaction, the impact of materials on spatial aesthetics and function, the atmosphere created by lighting, and the enhancement of brand image and atmosphere by color schemes; exploring how brand identity is reflected and strengthened through design, and how stores stand out from the competition with design; also studying the impact of design on customer experience, including its role in customer shopping journey, behavior and emotions; investigating the application of technology in the store to understand its improvement in function and customer engagement; finally, identifying the design challenges that the store may face and proposing targeted improvement suggestions. After completing the research, students need to create a 15-20 page presentation, inserting visual materials such as photos and sketches to assist in the analysis, and correctly citing at least 3 research sources.
Assignment brief 1_ISD60204_Spatial Design II_April 2025.pdf,作者 tian dongMy part A Overseas: ARC'TERYX始祖鸟•北大湖店 in China
My part B Local: N E O (23, Jalan Doraisamy, Chow Kit, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur)
Research Process:
First, I started looking for information on the website. The teacher shared a website in class. There were many pictures and introductions of store designs on that website for our reference. So I opened the website and started looking. I found a store design that I liked (Xianfeng Tianxia Granary Bookstore), but it was too limited because the store I liked was a bookstore. So I also had to do store research on bookstores in part B. However, in Malaysia, I felt that there were no good store designs. The designs of bookstores were all average.
I continued to look for the design of the store I wanted to find. This time I started to look for a certain type of store. I wanted to study clothing stores, so I started looking. I found the design of part a that I liked. It was the Arc'teryx Daming Lake store in Jilin, China. The reason why I chose it was because its overall design was in line with the characteristics of the Arc'teryx brand, the designer was very good at using space, and finally, the floor plan of this design could be found online, because the teacher told us that we needed a floor plan to analyze the overall layout of the store.
For part b, I chose a niche designer brand in Malaysia, Neo's store, because I think its overall layout and design are quite unique compared to the stores in shopping malls. Part b, I found this store through Instagram. Although it is far away from me, I still chose to research this store and conduct a field investigation.
Q: What problems did you encounter during the research?
During the research process, I think the two biggest problems were that I lacked imagination in the improvement content of part a and part b. I couldn't imagine what inspiration I could have to improve this place, which caused me to waste a lot of time in this direction. I looked at some inspirational materials and videos on the website. At first, I didn't know how to improve this space. Can I improve it into a virtual thing, much like VR? So I asked the teacher, and the teacher said that VR is more inclined to virtual interaction, and it has little to do with the space that can be designed physically. Consider doing physical interaction.
Finally, based on some of the information I read and my own imagination, I thought of some improvements for part a and part b and also drew some pictures.
PART A:

This is my final assignment, 1-Part A, B
Spatial Design II-DONGNUOYAN(0375740)-Assignment 1-PART A&B,作者 tian dongIn week 3, I showed my teacher both part A and part B, and he gave me some feedback.
For part a:
The teacher suggested that I write the layout part with more content on the topic in combination with the floor plan, which can be divided into two pages of PPT to clearly mark the layout of each area. For example, use red circles to mark, optimize the layout of pictures and texts, and increase the aesthetics of the PPT. The picture in the interface of layout impact on customer behavior and movement can be changed, as it is not very relevant to the content. In the sketch of improving this interface, the teacher thinks that I can further optimize the sketch picture so that everyone can see it clearly and also mark where the store you want to change is.
For part b:
The teacher suggested that we can optimize this page in the same way as A. We can draw an extra sketch, such as a perspective view or an exploded view, to show the visual effect of the space from different angles and also mark where we want to improve the store. In the floor plan drawing, the word "door" I marked is wrong; it should be changed to "main door."
I made changes in response to teacher feedback.
In week 5, we had a pre-session. The teacher gave me some suggestions about our Assignment 1, Part A and Part B. In Part B, I could mark the improved parts of the sketch with some names or use colors to indicate them, and the floor plan parts could be consistent.

Self-reflection:
In this speech, I had obvious shortcomings. I relied too much on the manuscript and looked down frequently, which led to insufficient eye contact with the audience, and the natural fluency and interactivity of the speech were greatly reduced. This exposed my lack of internalization and proficiency in the content, lack of confidence, and failure to effectively transform the prepared content into vivid expression, which affected the effect of information transmission.
Looking back on the homework process, when studying the ARC'TERYX Beidahu store in China (Part A) and the N E O store in Malaysia (Part B), I was confused about the direction of design improvement due to a lack of imagination in the early stage. Although I gradually solved it by consulting materials and communicating with the teacher, it also reflected the lack of depth and initiative in the early thinking. After the teacher's feedback, I realized the importance of details and specifications: the layout description of Part A was not in-depth enough. After guidance, I understood that it was necessary to combine the floor plan to mark each area in detail; the sketch of Part B marked "door" incorrectly and should be changed to "main door," which highlighted my lack of attention to details. These experiences made me deeply realize that whether it is homework or speech, in-depth preparation, attention to detail, strengthening content internalization, and confident expression are the keys to presenting high-quality results. In the future, I will make targeted improvements and enhance my overall abilities.
